Apr 21, 2016  PRIMARY VISION MODES. None (cosmetic) Night Vision - Three levels of brightness available. Made for the darkest areas, and somewhat mimics real night vision. Lenses glow green. Thermal - Two levels of brightness, but makes all living things glow red. Dead bodies turn blue and stay visible for 15 minutes after death for easy looting in the dark. For Fallout 4 on the Xbox One, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'Night vision won't. After using a night vision scope, my screen remains yellow/green and I can't get rid of it. Hold B button down and it should turn off.

When Fallout 4 first launched, I wrote a post called ‘’ It turned out to be pretty popular, and I like to think it’s a good guide for players just starting out.But for truly new players? New to the entire series? I’ve come to realize it doesn’t go far enough. I’ve recommended the game to many of my friends, but the ones unfamiliar with Fallout have been asking me questions that are at a far more basic level than even what I discussed in that initial piece. So, Fallout veterans, you might laugh at some of this stuff, but these are real questions I’ve been asked by new players, or things they’ve been confused about. Wasteland noobs, read on:1. VATSThe Question: “Why does shooting in this game suck so much, and why am I always out of ammo?”The Answer: Because for reasons unknown, Fallout 4 never actually introduces VATS to the player. On consoles, it’s the left bumper or L1.

It doesn’t stop time, but it slows it down, and allows you to aim at specific body parts of enemies. Headshots are usually best, but they’re often harder to hit.

The higher the number, the higher your percent chance of hitting. Take high-likelihood shots to save your sparse ammo, as trying to play the game like a regular shooter all the time is a recipe to have a lot less fun.2. Skill PerksThe Question: “Okay I’ve started maxing out the letters, when do I get perks?”The Answer: Again, this is poorly explained in the game, and has the potential to derail your entire playthrough if you’re not careful. Though I really like the functionality of the skill tree, knowing how to use it can be tough. I’ve seen players start maxing out specific SPECIAL attribute letters early, or even trying to max out ALL of them, because they don’t understand how the system works. You have to look not just across, but up and down. If you are level 10 Strength, for instance, that means you have access to at least the first level in ALL TEN perks under Strength.

Usually after putting in one point, you will have to wait to level higher before you can do another, but with high numbers in specific letters, you can unlock great perks early. Do NOT focus on maxing the letter value alone.

That will help you incrementally, but the point of doing that is to unlock the perks underneath. You may already have a ton unlocked you didn’t even realize.3. Base-BuildingThe Question: “Why can’t I build this damn bed?”The Answer: This was so confusing that this is a question I actually asked when I first started.

One of the first building missions in the game is to build a bed for your Sanctuary settlement. It tells you to go to the workshop, and select a bed.

Disadvantages of embedded systems. I did, but I didn’t understand how to play it anywhere. I couldn’t select it. The answer turned out to be that even hovering over an object means you’re about to build it, if you have the right qualifications and part. The problem was that the bed I was trying to build was stuck inside the wall behind the workbench, and I couldn’t even see it.

I didn’t understand that I had to move around and place it manually, and that it was already selected and ready to be built. Since then, I’ve heard from many other players that they ran into the same problem.4. Map ExplorationThe Question: “Why can I never find these map icons?”The Answer: This is one of those questions that would have never even crossed my mind since I’ve been playing open world RPGs for so long.

My friend kept asking how I found the “man” in the first town, and I eventually realized he was referring to the Minuteman logo that marked the subdivision of Sanctuary. He thought that the icons that appear on the map were referencing specific people or objects that he was supposed to find there, and was confused when he’d get there, and the symbol would just keep spinning around on his compass. Those icons represent general areas, specific objects or people will be marked with a much simpler indicator that’s a box with a line under it.5. Fast TravelThe Question: “Why does it take so long to get anywhere in this game?”The Answer: The existence of fast travel is mostly brushed over in this game, even if a tooltip about it may appear for a few seconds at one point.

If you’re not using it, chances are exploring the Wasteland can feel exhausting. Any location you’ve found on the map, meaning it’s marked with a filled-in icon, you can travel to. Often, the game will have you traveling far away to places you haven’t been to yet, but once you’re there, you can go back and forth by selecting the icon on the map and saying you want to fast travel there. This works for any discoverable location, not just bases, but you can’t travel when indoors or when enemies are actively pursuing you.

It’s always a good idea when exploring to find new places on the way to your final destination, as if you die or get sidetracked, you can fast travel back to them and shorten your journey. HealingThe Question: “I’m always hurt and have no healing supplies.”The Answer: If you’re a new player trying to heal always by just using supplies, you’re going to have a bad time. One of the game’s most useful systems it that when you sleep, ie. Activate a bed, you instantly heal everything but radiation damage, even if you’re only down for an hour. Settlements are the best places to find beds, but they can be found anywhere. Even if you’re in the middle of a raider camp, so long as any enemies aren’t after you, you can catch a quick healing nap on of their beds to heal up.

This really helps to conserve your Stimpacks for when you need them the most.7. LimbsThe Question: “Why can’t I see straight, shoot straight, or walk fast?”The Answer: Sometimes if you take a ton of damage, you’ll see a little Pip-Boy man with injuries appear on the right side of your screen, depending on what he has bandaged, that’s a limb you have crippled. A cracked head will blur your vision, a broken arm will make it harder to aim, and a broken leg will slow you down. The only way to heal broke limbs is to use a Stimpack or go to a town doctor. Sleeping and regular food won’t do the trick. If you’re super slow and don’t have a broken leg?

You are probably carrying too much weight, and will have to drop some stuff. Which leads me to8. StorageThe Question: “Why can’t I hold all this crap?”The Answer: It is not immediately apparent that your entire base acts as one giant, unlimited storage bin. In Fallout 3, I remember having a bottomless chest I put pretty much all my crap into, but here, at any workbench, you can store items that you can access later from that location, and they’re shared across all benches in the area. And anything classified as “junk” can be insta-stored with a single button press, triangle or Y.

All that crap you find in the wild may seem useless, but it’s what you’ll need to upgrade items later on, and it’s a lot easier to collect and store than it would initially appear.9. ArmorThe Question: “Why does my armor keep equipping and unequipping?”The Answer: Armor is kind of complicated in Fallout 4. There are a few different kinds, and some of them overlap with each other. The basic structure of armor is left and right legs, left and right arms, a chestpiece, a helmet, and an undersuit like your Vault suit or things like “raider leathers.” Sometimes, you will find a cool set of armor (Tower Tom’s Spike Armor is an early one you might find), but it will take over ALL the pieces of your armor, and often result in a net defense decrease. Look at the highlighted parts of your Pip-Boy armor guy when selecting armor to see what will be replaced. And all of this is separate from Power Armor, which functions as a kind of Iron Man suit, and can be worn over whatever you’re currently wearing. Even now, I don’t have the entire system figured out.

After 100 hours of gameplay, I just found something called “Super Mutant Chains” which is completely invisible on my character and doesn’t take up any other slot, despite adding defense. As I said, it’s complicated.10.

Lost CompanionsThe Question: “How do I find once I’ve dismissed them?”The Answer: I struggled with this too. There are a few answers, depending on the situation. If you’ve dismissed someone and can’t remember where they went, chances are they will auto-default back to wherever you found them, ie. MacReady at the Third Rail, Curie at Vault 81, and so on. If you know where they were sent, but can’t find them, build a bell.

It will summon everyone in your settlement so you can easily locate them. Works great for a big place like Sanctuary. Unfortunately, this won’t work with Dogmeat, who I lost for fifty hours at one point.

Turns out he was hiding in one of the doghouses in Sanctuary, doghouses I didn’t even know existed. I deleted those from the map, and built my own by the central base building, and now he’s there every single time I come back.Any other basic questions? There are no dumb questions, especially when it comes to Fallout 4, which seems to enjoy not explaining things.Follow me,.
