Hi,So in the Steam sale is the Paradox bundle with Stellaris, Hearts of Iron IV, Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV.I own Stellaris (not actually played it yet) already, but I'm tempted to get this bundle because I'm a little tempted by HoI4 and CK2.So my question really is, is it worth getting the base game of CK2?There seems to be so much DLC for it, is it worth getting without some/all of it?The there's Europa Universalis IV. Not a game I've really been interested in before, but it'd cost me £21.48 for HoI4 and CK2 or £27.20 for all 3 (meaning EU4 is £5.72).
Is EU4 any good? And again, is it any good without some/all of the DLC?Thanks.P.S. Damn Steam sales!
(If you see a thread about Tyranny pop up, that's probably me too). Click to expand. The best grand strategy games ever made are those two (CK2 and EU4).
However they are VERY different games also.CK2 is more of a dynasty game, while EU4 is more of empire game.I have found CK2 more fun, but each on their own.
Crusader Kings II is a grand strategy video game published in 2011 by Paradox Interactive, a sequel to their 2007 cult classic Crusader Kings. Unlike their other popular grand strategy games, like Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron, where the player controls the generally amorphous government of a nation-state, players in Crusader Kings control a dynastic succession of rulers throughout the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages, and each character in the game has their own statistics, personality traits, and character portraits. Players can arrange marriages, conquer land, usurp titles, and, of course, fight in Crusades (deus vult!), whether as a lowly count or the emperor of all Europe. Expansions to the game have added many more functions, like allowing players to play as Muslims, pagans, or nomads, and adding features such as earlier start dates and more complex internal politics. This Let's Play will be focusing on the exploits of the de Crepon dynasty. William de Crepon was an earl in England under William the Conqueror, the Norman duke who conquered England in 1066. This game will begin on December 26th, the day after William's coronation as the King of England.
I will be focusing on telling a story with the characters and playing them based on their traits, rather than trying to usurp titles and 'paint the map' as fast as possible. December 26th, 1066 ADI am William de Crepon. I am the son of Osborn de Crepon, the old steward of the Duke of Normandy and one of His Majesty King William's guardians. I am one of His Majesty's closest councillors and the chancellor of England. I possess the estates of Gloucester and Hereford. My lovely wife is Adelis de Tosny, and I have four children: Emma, Roger, William, and Adelise. I do not wish to brag; but my friends tell me that I am kind and honest to them, although my wife wishes I would stop lusting for her every night.Roger, my son and heir, is a fine lad.
He seeks the highest of truths, and is a quiet thinker-something I, myself, can appreciate. His Majesty, King William, conquered the realm from Harold Godwinson and repelled Old Norway in a great war earlier this year. He was crowned yesterday. He is a fine man, and granted me my estates after conquering the realm for my years of service.
With luck, perhaps he will grant me more.January 13th, 1067 ADI am honored to say that His Majesty enlisted my help in granting titles to the nobility of England. He has graciously given me the authority to have my own son as Earl of Somerset.January 14th, 1067 ADA doctor was found today, a man called Rayner. Though young and inexperienced, I think he will do well at my court. I hope that he may make a name for himself one day.January 26th, 1067 ADHis Majesty, after consulting with his peers, declared war on the Scot for control of Cumberland, for he claims all lands south of Hadrian's Wall and east of Wales.
September 3rd, 1067I'm Roger de Crepon and I'm going to be the smartest guy ever someday. I spend all day reading about heroes and sages and I want to be King Arthur and meet Merlin when I grow up even though my name isn't Arthur.
My dad died a couple days ago and I'm still really sad but Mom says I mustn't complain. Dad's stuff got split up between me and William and we're both jealous of each other now but I think we'll be OK eventually. This is my guardian, Uncle Sayer. He's not really my uncle but I call him that anyway. He's super smart and he got educated by a priest and he always works super hard and he's the most justest man I've ever met. He always tells me to keep my hands off the girls and he looks over his shoulder a lot but he's pretty cool and I'm glad he takes care of me.
I really miss Dad but Sayer says that if I rule well Dad will always be in my heart. He tells me if I work hard and do what Uncle King William says I'll be OK. I think Sayer gives good advice. This is Adelard, my regent. He keeps my properties in order until I turn 16 and I can't wait until I'm 16! But until then he keeps them in order.
He seems kind of shady and he asks a lot of questions and always eyes my stuff like he wants it but he's really good at his job and I'm glad.January 6th, 1068Today I'm starting my real education! Sayer says that he'll teach me about learning and God and stuff because I have a 'talent' for it. I can't wait!May 15th, 1068Radolf, the man Dad sent to command our forces in the war, came home today! He says that we won and defeated the Scots! Hooray for England!June 17th, 1068This jerk Will who says that he doesn't want to be a scholar and wants to be a steward gave me a sweetmeat today. I guess I'll stop punching him even though he's a jerk.July 13th, 1068You know what?
I've had it with my brother William. He's always gloating about how he got Hereford and I didn't and I'm really goddamn angry about him.
Sayer says that sometimes.July 28th, 1068I'm so goddamn angry that I'm taking it. Adelard said that if I really wanted to I can take it so I said OK and told him to marshal the forces. Sayer didn't look happy about it but I don't care.August 18th, 1068We're marching on William's land right now! I'm taking that goddamn land and I'm going to like it!September 18th, 1068We beat William's stupid army!
Like 300 of his stupid men died. Hahaha.October 23, 1068Will's dad took over as my regent today.
I guess he's OK.December 6th, 1068Some guy called the Earl of Northampton is revolting against Uncle His Majesty William. I hope Uncle His Majesty William beats his army into the ground, hahaha.June 5th, 1069This siege went on forever but today we finally took William's stupid castle and took his stupid courtier prisoner. She's actually kinda pretty.June 12th, 1069Uncle His Majesty William passed a law today. I guess it's a pretty important one but I don't know what it does and Sayer's explanation was confusing.November 15th, 1069Today we beat William in the war for his stupid goddamn county.
I have it and it doesn't feel satisfying but I'm making it feel satisfying in my head because it should feel that way.William said he's never talking to me again. I don't care. After that he left to go live with some guy in Italy.August 25, 1070I'm not saying 'g-ddamn' anymore. Sayer said it's rude a few days ago, and made me read a ton of Bible verses as punishment.
Now, I feel that it's worse than rude, and I beg for forgiveness for taking God's name in vain. I suppose I must control my temper from now on.January 2nd, 1072Today, I turned 16. Sayer said that he had trained me well, and my regent gave me my crown. I am a man grown, and I will lead my small realm to glory under King William and God.January 5th, 1072To properly rule the realm, I will need a wife.
This beautiful woman WILL be mine, I swear it.January 14th, 1072Judith and I were married today. She was a bit cold toward me, and seemed quite sad besides, but my mentor Sayer tells me she is much like my father.
Perhaps I can cheer her up with a sermon.February 1st, 1072King William declared war for his county of Vexin on the king of France. Apparently, he still owns his Norman properties, and is bitter he was never granted control of his rightful possessions of the county of Vexin.July 4th, 1072Today, while working in my study, I realized that I must truly take to heart my old mentor Sayer's lessons in diligence. I resolve to work harder than ever before, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.January 20th, 1073I requested the help of my councilors today. Together, we drafted laws much akin to those passed by King William several years ago. Sayer helped us draft them; according to him, it is now unlawful for a lesser lord to refuse my intervention in their wars, and he explained that I may now have all of my titles passed to one son, rather than running the risk of splitting them between my sons, should Judith bear me two or more.June 19th, 1073I. I have no words. I cannot bear to say it.I.
Will be at the church today.and the day after. My apologies for the intrusion, my lord.To the readers of the future: I am Sayer, the mentor and friend of Roger de Crepon. After his wife's death, while Lord Roger was at the church, I took it upon myself to send out to several renowned lords. I discovered that the earl of Cornwall has a daughter, near of age, who would be a fine match for Roger. As it will be some half a year until young Rioan. The young lady is ready to marry, he still has plenty of time to grieve for his wife.
He is too busy praying to record in his journals, and I fear provoking one of his fits of rage should I ask him about it.January 1st, 1074Sayer arranged a marriage for me some six months ago. Though I was quite wroth with him for a time, I have since come to my senses. Judith is with God now; however, I know of His commands to populate the earth, and of my duty to the realm to marry and make heirs. As such, I have agreed to marry this Rioantdric.
I had met with her; she is a hard worker and proud of her lineage, and her unusual education in war will surely come in handy some day.Thank you, Sayer.April 4th, 1074No. To hell with this. I can't do this.
I'm sick of it. I'm sick of obsessing over God, I'm sick of judging people, I'm so sick of it I physically feel worse.August 6th, 1074William came crawling back to me today, like I didn't already have enough bloody headaches as it is.
I'm going to marry him off to some old hag with a false nose if I get the chance.August 24th, 1074Dear reader, please forgive my fit of wroth in the previous entry. After a talk with my mentor Sayer, he told me of the daughter of old Godwinson, and how she was now widowed.
I realized that although I am not on speaking terms with William, a marriage to the old princess would be a fine thing for the realm. I consented to their marriage.November 27th, 1074Today I. Hell with this, I'm putting the book down, getting an ale, and seeing if Reanlnlbnela wants a tumble.December 21st, 1074Have I mentioned this asshat yet? The king made him a duke and gave him authority over me.
Screw that guy. I think I'm going to send the chancellor off to Winchester and take his damn duchy.Oh, and William won the war for Vexin.
Good for him, I guess.March 15th, 1075Have I mentioned how hot my brother's wife is? Not only is she aa woman of very full proportions, she absolutely loves, ahem, 'getting it'.
Serves her bastard husband right, hah.September 3rd, 1075Today my wife told me she's pregnant.I feel awful now. Far cry 2 golden guns. I'm breaking it off with Gunhild. Rioantdric is my wife, and that's enough for me.October 1st, 1075Now King William's trying to revoke the duchy of Warwick. I think he just gets a kick out of revoking the titles of the Anglo-Saxons.January 18th, 1076Gunhild had a daughter. Thankfully, she's not mine.I hope William never finds out about that. I need another ale.April 5th, 1076Rioantdric and I have had a son. Rioandtric wants to name him William, after my father, but this damn kingdom has enough Williams running around.
I want to name him after a Biblical hero, but I can't pick which one. We just went with William in the end.
I'm hoping to eventually usurp the throne and create Britannia, but I don't intend to, say, kill my best friend for power, or use my kids as bargaining tools, unless I have no other choice or it fits the character (e.g. A cruel, ambitious, or arbitrary character.) I won't deliberately act stupid or do self-destructive things just because my character is an idiot, but I won't go around shanking people for power if my character is canonically a nice guy or a family man.Basically, I'm not going to go for the standard Tywin Lannister wannabe playstyle unless the character is a Tywin Lannister wannabe. September 11th, 1076It looks like the Duke of Warwick's rebellion is over-not because he's lost, but because the king is dead. Long live King Robert or whatever, I guess.
He seems like an asshole to me.January 6th, 1077Rioantdrec pushed me into taking up theology today. She kept telling me I was spending too much time at court, and that it was stressing me out. Perhaps the word of God is just what I need.July 4th, 1077I've been reading my Bible and speaking with the priests quite a bit recently, and the priests' talk of monks and hermits has inspired me to go into seclusion myself in hopes of a revelation. Sayer will fill in for me while I'm away.July 19th, 1077Perhaps. Perhaps I have drunk to excess, recently. Forgive me, o Lord.
And forgive me, Rioantdrec.February 4th, 1078I have come to realize that my studies will make my worthy in the eyes of God and men alike. God may will it, but so will I!April 1st, 1078My Chancellor returned today, with a document 'proving' my rightful ownership of Winchester. My vengeance upon the Duke of Somerset is nearly complete! Ahahaha, that unworthy duke will be a thorn in my side no longer! What an April Fools' joke for him!April 18th, 1078i now know how father feltwhy am i paying this father-slaying buffoonseriouslyMay 22nd, 1078Merely a false alarm. God works in mysterious ways.January 18th, 1079In a great battle against the forces of the foul Duke, I bravely charged his devilish lines in the name of God and all that is holy!February 14th, 1079God wills my vengeance!I am the Duke of Somerset! Surely, Father would be proud of my efforts to increase the de Crepons' social standing.March 4th, 1079My wife's wise counsel has propelled me to greater ambitions.
I will be the greatest of rulers! Ha ha-ha-ha-ha!April 5th, 1079The king demanded I abstain from factionalism. Though I have no love for the man, I am not in a position to quarrel with him today.May 14th, 1079While looking over my estates today, I was told of this absurd buffoon, Berold de Chypre. I am appalled at his ridiculous will to serve the king, rather than his rightful liege, myself. I will march against him to have his vassalage transferred to me posthaste! To war!August 30th, 1079It seems that the infidel Kaiser of the Germans has declared one of his vassals a pretender Pope. I am disgusted by this action, but my liege has, in one of his rare fits of wisdom, declared war to defeat this foul usurper.
Deus vult!May 20th, 1080Begrudgingly, Berold has submitted to my demands. I now properly rule all the lands of Somerset, and some more besides.March 14th, 1081Dear reader, my deepest apologies for my lack of entries-I have been busy reading my Bible and administering the realm. I feel obligated to note, however, that the war against the German goes poorly. I fear our efforts may be wasted.September 8th, 1081It seems the common folk are being ravaged by the dreaded Measles. Given my woefully incompetent physician, I felt it was in my and my family's best interests to bar entry to the castle at Somerset until the epidemic has passed.November 6th, 1081I hate my life.January 1st, 1082I have no illuminations to accompany this entry; I only wish to consider the affairs of the realm.I despise my life. Though I put on a courteous face, I fear I cannot conceal the deadness in my soul.We have lost the war against the antipope and his heathen emperor.
I can only hope another force works to depose this disgusting pretender.Measles still kills off the commoners.December 4th, 1082We are all holy on this blessed day!(The page is stained, seemingly by several teardrops.)July 4th, 1083I have saved another Sayer, a bishop who has been my acquaintance during many theological discussions. Not only are we indebted to one another, I for his friendship and he for his life, but he fills the gap of my mentor, who died of old age some time ago. The perpetrator of this crime has, of course, been hanged.August 9th, 1083The commoners have at last recovered. We opened the gates today, to mixed cries of joy at our leaving seclusion and anger that the castle was barred for so long.June 1st, 1084In spite of peace in the realm for some time, these fools have decided to 'throw off the Norman yoke' and 'return to their Anglo-Saxon roots'. How ridiculous.
They lost the 1066 war, fair and square!August 1st, 1084Thankfully, the king put the rebellion down in a matter of months. Serves those fool peasants right.October 15th, 1086I've always thought falconry seems enjoyable. I could use a second hobby, after all.January 7th, 1087I love falcons, indeed.
Melting Pot Menu Prices
I wonder if there are any Bible passages about them.May 12th, 1087After another trip to the forest for a few days, I think that I have learned the real meaning of temperance, God be praised.February 12th, 1088I know that I have not written much of him, but William is shaping up to be a fine young man. Though he gets into trouble on occasion, he is one of the most conscientious young men I've ever known. I am proud to call him my son.April 11th, 1088I will teach William the ways of an administrator. I have learned in my many years that a skilled administrator is a good ruler-much more so than a charming diplomat or a strong warrior.January 1st, 1089I am told that the violent creed of these 'assassins' has created considerable chaos in Persia. Luckily for me, England is half a world away! Hah.July 1st, 1089Today, while going over my expenses, I realized that I have enough disposable income to maintain a small, personal guard of pikemen. Ideally, this core of professional soldiers will be able to strengthen my armies consdierably in times of war.December 12th, 1090William has grown up to be a fine lad.
Though preparing him for rulership has worn me to the bone, it will be worth it, both for myself and for the realm. He is dutiful, wise, and quite strong to boot.Perhaps I should start looking into a wife for him.December 27th, 1090I've found a fine young Italian woman for my son to marry. She's beautiful, skilled, and the daughter of a genius Venetian merchant prince. The two will love one another, I am sure of it.May 27th, 1090My liege has offered me a position on the council of the realm, as his personal steward. I am honored-and moreover, the king is sorely lacking in skill with numbers.June 28th, 1090The rather detestable Duke of Warwick wishes for my support on the council. I stand to gain little, and do not see what he plans. I trust him not.October 11th, 1090Today, I have decreed a new succession law in the Duchy of Somerset; henceforth, all titles shall pass to the eldest son, Salic law be damned.
This should greatly increase the stability in the realm upon future successions.December 7th, 1090I. There is no way that.
William.March 4th, 1091Though the treatment the physician provided seemed to work, I still worry for William's condition.April 14th, 1091William has recovered from his illness, and now he is a man grown. He excels in all I have taught him. He was married just today, and seemed to be having the time of his life.I am proud of you, my son. It is time for you to make your own way in the world now.Sorry not much of note happened in this update-if things keep going the way they've been, though, the next one should be a bit more eventful. April 14th, 1092Now that I've finished raising my son and he's ready to make his own way in the world, it's time for me to look to his future when he inherits. To make your way in the world, you have to do some unsavory things, and I don't want William to have to deal with guilt he can't stomach. For years, I've had my eye on the duchy of Gloucester.
The Duke is an arbitrary and deceitful man-ungodly in the extreme. I've been attempting to convince the lords of the realm that I would serve better as its ruler, but my claims have had little luck. So, I think it's time to get a bit. Unconventional.June 8th, 1092It turns out that not much was needed to gather support for my cause. That secretive whoreson will be quaking in his boots!Farewell, sweet duke!July 4th, 1092His forces were crushed in a decisive battle! A few short sieges and my 'birthright' will be all mine.May 24th, 1093We had been laying siege to old Gloucester's cities when news arrived of His Holiness's intent of a holy war never before seen on the Earth.
Should it be called, I will personally lead an army in God's name!October 30th, 1093A bastard of the Dane has sharked up a list of lawless resolutes, to an England-conquering enterprise that has stomach in it. I intend to stop at nothing to prevent Danes from ruling this land ever again, and will join my forces to King Robert's the moment I have defeated the cruel Duke.November 8th, 1093We shall toast to this glorious victory all night tonight! Let us both remember the fallen and look to the future, God be praised!January 2nd, 1094My liege has accepted my offer to personally assist him in the war against that Viking claimant. The Dane shall know our wrath!Febrary 7th, 1094The huscarls, soldiers-for-hire, and knight-errants recruited by this adventurer fell beneath King Robert's and my metaphorical hammer. We will follow them in their retreat and crush this fool's fantasy once and for all!April 12th, 1094As if a bastard could defeat a king.December 1st, 1094I've been quite stressed recently, with little time for anything but work. But there is always time for the will of God. My ship sails in the morning!May 11th, 1095It has been a long journey, one I was forced to take a leave of absence from the council for, and one that has been sweltering and torturous.
The coast swarms with the Saracens. But I know we shall be victorious, for we have God in our hearts!Deus vult!June 4th, 1095I regret to say it, but we are going home right away. The Saracens' swords are sharp, their horses are fast, and their food gives me bowel problems. But let no man say I am not a Crusader!December 6th, 1095William's wife has taken her last breath, producing me naught but a sickly granddaughter. I should have known better than to marry him to a commoner.June 8th, 1096Though all the local women his age were already married, I've managed to secure a deal with Robert after a council meeting.
His daughter Valdrade is to wed my son Roger once she comes of age. Roger can wait nine years for the power and status that comes with marrying a princess, can't he?July 13th, 1097The Duke of Warwick, an Anglo-Saxon man, is one of my greatest enemies in the realm. He is the Marshal and the Master of the Hunt, yet still he hates His Majesty with a passion. I believe he shall be my next target. King Robert would lose a powerful enemy and gain a powerful friend in his place, so what's not to like?September 4th, 1097This so-called artifact could be. It would be quite prestiguous to have an item of legend in my possession.December 23rd, 1097That would explain this mess he called a 'crusade'.June 8th, 1098News came that King Robert was killed in a hunting accident two months ago. However, I have many suspicions.
His Majesty died in a hunting accident, they say, due to having drank too much. But Robert was never a drunkard, and his servants claimed he ate and drank almost nothing at his afternoon meal that day, eager to move on with the hunt.
I was unable to reach his cupbearer for comment-even more suspicious. But perhaps most important-Robert supported my claim to the Duchy of Warwick, and the Duke of Warwick is.
Shall we say. The sort to kill a man he doesn't like.Robert de Normandie didn't die in a hunting accident. He was murdered, almost certainly on Warwick orders!July 3rd, 1098Damn it! Damn it all!October 30th, 1098The new king, King Aubrey, is a fine man. However, he is under attack from the Duke of Northampton, who wishes to put a Godwin on the throne!
I shall ride to the aid of my liege posthaste!June 21st, 1099A lie can hurt almost as well as the truth, if told in the right place at the right time. And this lie ought to help win others to my cause.July 23rd, 1099I.
I don't know if the shame of Gunhild will ever leave me.August 16th, 1099So, as it turns out, my lie was not far from the truth. I doubt that King Aubrey will find the young man tied up in Warwick's dungeon free of tunic or hose amusing. Is this how vengeance feels?
It feels delicious.December 21st, 1099That usurper could have been bad, but thanks to my intervention, we have naught to fear.January 28th, 1100It seems that my plotting may have been somewhat for naught, for that kingslayer is an open rebel, as well. Not for long.February 2nd, 1100Time to defeat this pretender. And get real vengeance for Robert.May 1st, 1100The Lombard sellswords I hired arrived too late. This may be difficult to bounce back from.June 1st, 1101The liberal application of mercenaries has allowed us to defeat Warwick's main forces. The Lombard Band has my sincerest thanks!January 1st, 1105After several long years of little but siege after siege, my forces combined with those of the king and his allies have won a decisive victory against Warwick. We believe that we should be able to defeat Warwick for good in time.January 28th, 1105The vile Duke has accepted a 'white peace'-though he will not make full concessions, he has been imprisoned and branded a traitor of the realm.
That kingslayer has met his comeuppance! Additionally, I've successfully garnered enough support to be declared the rightful Duke of Warwick-with any luck, I should be able to usurp the title, and if not I, then William may.March 25th, 1105My levies have recovered sufficiently to wage war. For Warwick!June 28th, 1105Today was a fine day! Not only did I win a decisive battle. But William and Valdrade were married!October 13th, 1105I cannot express how disappointed I am in William, but I must confess to understand his urges.Like father, like son.June 18th, 1106At last, William has fathered a trueborn and male child.
I am not proud of his middle child, but the succession is at least safe.January 19th, 1107Although feet are certainly strange articles, they are holy and prestiguous nontheless.June 16th, 1107It seems that the foul Duke of Warwick has been succeeded by his craven son. As if that were any better.February 10th, 1108My brother, William, has joined his wife in death. They leave a niece, who, might I add, is the mother of my son William's bastard. At the funeral, after all the other guests had left, I went to the tomb and begged for William's forgiveness. Now that he has passed, I wish that I had had time to tell him in life, and to make amends.March 11th, 1109My 'right' is now truly mine. Though I do not have the vassalage of the counts of Warwick, I may gain them soon enough.March 26th, 1109Now a fellow of the Of Wessex family has refused the revocation of a county. I think they just like rebelling, traitorous bastards.
The king should have their heads on pikes after all they've done against the realm.June 17th, 1109I don't feel quite right.I hope that it's just 'not feeling quite right'.August 7th, 1109It wasn't just 'not feeling quite right'.I'm going back to the Bible.August 11th, 1109I told my physician, Rayner, to do whatever was necessary.August 14th, 1109I feel quite weak. I fear that I may never rise from my bed again, so here I lay out for my son and wife my final words and will:My son, William de Crepon, is to succeed to the duchies of Somerset, Gloucester, and Warwick. I leave no heir but him.
I confess to my family my infidelity, and pray for their forgiveness; I am truly sorry. I pray that William shall be a loyal friend and a kind councillor to King Aubrey de Normandie. May William temper his valor with mercy and his courage with honor. And may RioanSeptember 4th, 1109. I'm not done with the next update yet, but I just wanted to mention two things:- I started this before I found out that the English melting pot doesn't work correctly on default settings (the idea is that English forms from Anglo-Saxon and Norman around 1100, so that William and his kids have to sit through 50 years of Anglo-Saxons being sore over the conquest before everybody finds a happy medium, but at that pace the Normans start to accidentally convert counties to Norman before they can turn English. 'Faster Melting Pots' fixes this issue.) I'm going to see if I can find some way to make England English somewhere down the line, but as it stands England is halfway between being Anglo-Saxon and Norman, with a few rare smatterings of English culture here and there.- I also started this before the 2.7.0.2 patch, leaving the Secret Religious Cults option to 'default'.
I might encounter a small issue where Catholicism falls to secret Orthodox cultists or something like that.
