The literal meaning of Gayatri Mantra is - The three lokas or worlds - ‘Bhu’, ‘Bhuvah’, and ‘Svah’ is led by the Sun God or Surya. Tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ - Sun, who is the leader of the three worlds, we salute (vareṇyaṃ) him.
